By painting images, I seek to capture a fundamental human condition of wandering, which, in my contemporary experience, manifests itself through the gaze more than through any other physical action.
My painting process brings the image’s space into a “breathing” state, as if the air within the depicted place can be felt. That palpability of depth is crucial in generating a movement back and forth, evoking a nomadic state of being in which one can never truly settle.
In my paintings, this penetrable quality of the image is created through a laborious process of layering oil paint using brushes in a dabbing technique. On top of a bright white ground, I gradually move from the lightest tones to the darkest in order to create a glowing effect, as if the image contains an inner light source, contributing to its magnetic visual lure.
Born in 1990, I still remember a world not dictated by the omnipresence of images. In this ongoing cycle of works, Particle Paintings, I reflect on the power of the image to provide a horizon—an alternative to the physical presence of the body, a mental place of escape.
